Leader’s Statement – Anniversary of Ukraine invasion

Cllr Bethia Thomas, leader of Vale of White Horse District Council, has issued a statement on the war in Ukraine:

“This Friday 24 February marks one year since the full-scale invasion of Ukraine by Russia. Our hearts go out to people who have had their lives overturned by this devastating and illegal war and reaffirm our solidarity and unwavering support for the people of Ukraine.

“Tomorrow, we’ll be flying the Ukraine flag at our office in Abingdon and will observe a minute’s silence at 11am. We encourage all residents, businesses, staff and partner organisations to do the same.

“I’m grateful for the compassion and generosity our district’s residents and businesses have already shown to those caught up in this devastating conflict and I know you will continue to support our Ukrainian guests.

“Over the past year, we’ve proudly worked alongside our colleagues and communities across the county to support hundreds of individuals and families from Ukraine who have arrived in Vale of White Horse.

“Through our Homes for Ukraine scheme, our residents are currently hosting approximately 400 Ukrainian guests living with 250 different hosts across our district.

“Our dedicated Community Hub works with the wider Oxfordshire partnership to support both guests and hosts. This includes initial arrival needs, access to funding, health, language and employment support, and working with our housing team for assistance and advice.

“I promise that this Council will continue this work, for as long as it is needed, and do all we can to offer the warmest possible welcome and necessary support for those seeking refuge.”
