Work to start on installing EV chargers in Faringdon

Work will begin on the Park and Charge Electric Vehicle charging scheme in Faringdon next week.

Southampton Street is the fourth of Vale of White Horse District Council’s car parks where EV chargers are being installed as part of the scheme. It follows Portway car park in Wantage and Cattle Market and West St Helen car parks in Abingdon where work has already begun.

The Park and Charge scheme proposes a total of up to 62 new charging points in car parks across the Vale of White Horse district.

The installation work will involve several bays being fenced off temporarily and some short-term disruption to the car park.

The council will announce the rest of the work to be done as part of this project in the Vale shortly. All work is due to be completed by the end of March.

The Park and Charge scheme allows residents without off-street parking to park overnight and charge up using a ‘fast’ 7 – 22kw EV charging point. The chargers will also provide much needed battery top-ups to commuters and visitors during the daytime.

Councillor Catherine Webber, Vale of White Horse District Council Cabinet member for the Environment and Climate Emergency, said: “Although our first preferred option of travel in the Vale is to walk, to cycle or to use public transport, our second preferred option is to use electric vehicles. This is great news for the town. The new chargers can help residents make the switch to electric vehicles. It can also entice EV owners to visit Faringdon which can in turn help local businesses and shops.”

Councillor David Grant, chair of the Vale of White Horse District Council’s Climate Emergency Advisory Committee and Faringdon ward member said: “Park and Charge is exactly the kind of project we want to see more of in the Vale and we are delighted it has come to Faringdon.

“The Climate Emergency Advisory Committee recommends this kind of partnership working which supports towns, parishes and residents to get ready for the future.”
