Views sought on future development at airfield at Dalton Barracks, Abingdon

We’re asking your views on how future development at the airfield at Dalton Barracks near Abingdon should look and feel, and how it should contribute to the area.

Part of the airfield at the Ministry of Defence site at Dalton Barracks was chosen for development as part of the Vale of White Horse Local Plan.

The development will include 1,200 homes as well as a primary school and a local centre and will incorporate Garden Village principles.

Garden Villages are new communities that should have high quality and good design hard-wired in from the outset.

We’re creating what’s known as a Supplementary Planning Document, also known as an SPD, which provides more detailed guidance on policies in the Local Plan, such as the Dalton Barracks Strategic Allocation. It can’t introduce new policies but is considered when determining planning applications at the site.

We’ve launched a consultation to give you the opportunity to comment on the draft guidance we’ve set out in the SPD. We’ll consider your comments and make appropriate changes to the document before we adopt it.

Councillor Debby Hallett, Vale of White Horse District Council Deputy Leader and Cabinet Member for Corporate Services and Transformation, said: “The SPD is really important in helping ensure the future development at this allocated site is high quality and consistent with garden village principles, that it contributes to the local area, and creates a healthy and vibrant community.

“We also want to help make sure the allocated site has excellent public transport, cycle ways and footpath connections.

“We want to hear from as many people as possible so we can try to reflect these views in the final document.”

The consultation runs until 11.59pm on Thursday 18 November.

Following the consultation period, we’ll review all comments and prepare a Consultation Statement summarising the main issues and how we have addressed them in an updated final version of the SPD. The SPD is expected to be considered for adoption in early 2022.
